Week Beginning the 2nd June

Unit 9 – Production Values On Monday 6 th January, I went with the Camden Youth Theatre to see Cryrano De Bergerac starring James McAvoy at the Playhouse Theatre. The lighting used was: Spotlight – The spotlight was used to highlight a performer or a certain area of the stage. The spotlight made the audience focus on that character in that scene. Floodlight – The floodlight gave light to the whole stage and backdrop. Coloured filters can be used with this light. The audience saw everything that happened on the stage and did not have to concentrate on one area. Fresnel – The fresnel has a softer edged effect, it created a dark mood on stage. The audience knew it was an important moment in the play. Neon Lights – The Neon Lights created a scary atmosphere which made me think the stage looked like the inside of a space rocket. The production of Cryrano De Bergerac was very professional, different types of stage lighting was used to create drama at certain times in t...

Week Beginning the 26th May

Unit 9 – production Value My character Susan is in her early twenties, she wears popular clothes to work so the kids know she is young and approachable unlike Mr Briggs who the kids think is old in his appearance and is disliked by everyone at the school. Susan would wear clothes from Topshop, Zara and H&M. For the school trip her outfit would be a smart but casual dress, not too revealing with trainers as there will be lots of walking and she might have to chase after some of the kids if they mess around. Susan’s costume will convey the difference between the teachers and the kids, as the kids will be in school uniform. She would carry a rucksack to hold a first aid kit, sun cream as well as her lunch. Wearing a bright coloured scrunchie on her wrist just in case she wanted to tie her hair up and to show she can be fun and add a bit of colour to her outfit. Wearing a rainproof jacket in preparation for bad weather. The makeup Susan would wear is mascara, blusher and lip bal...

Week Beginning the 11th May

On Monday 11th May, this morning we went over scenes 31 – 41 of “Our Day Out” with Rob and Shenagh. Everyone was focused on their lines so reading the script went smoothly. However, because of bad internet connection, Shenagh wanted to go over scene 32 again. This is one of the reasons I find online classes difficult because hearing who is supposed to read next makes the lesson longer. I feel my performance went well today: I took my time when saying my lines My voice was clear I was able to convey how my character Susan was feeling at that moment. E.g in scene 33, when confronting Reilly on the line “Well, Brian … I’m here” I spoke in a slow and flirty tone which made Reilly confused and nervous. I am enjoying this play because of Willy Russell’s ability to bring his characters to life, making the reader feel annoyed, happy and sympathetic through out the play. On Tuesday 12 th May this morning, we w ent over scenes 32-35 of “Our Day Out” with Rob and Shenagh. The lesson ...

Week Beginning the 4th May

On Monday 4 th May, I had a Zoom call with Shenagh and my class this morning. We read through the script of “Our Day Out”. We went over scenes 1 to 4. Due to COVID-19 and not being at college, rehearsing from home by computer or phone can cause problems. One of the difficulties that arose in today’s lesson was not being able to follow the script smoothly, people had to be told when it was their line. I found it frustrating because I have been practicing my lines every day and I concentrate during the lesson. Shenagh suggested to the class that they should get familiar with the script for next lesson so we can get through more scenes and bring the play to life. On Tuesday 5 th May, myself and the class rehearsed the script of “Our Day Out” with Chris, our TA this morning. Once again, I found it frustrating because the class was not focused, people still had to be told when it was their line. However, Chris decided it would be a good idea to discuss how each scene went after reading...

Week Beginning the 28th April

On Tuesday 28 th April, I had a Zoom call with Rob and my class this morning. We read through the script of “Our Day Out”. As some people were not in lesson, we had to read their lines. Reading the script with my class was very helpful because it made me understand how my character Susan who is a teacher would perform a line. For example, when Reilly says, “Sir’s in love, Sir’s in love!” I would turn to look at him with a raging stare and say, “Watch it, Brian!” in a sharp and angry tone of voice. This shows that Susan is of a higher status as she is a teacher, she has had enough of Reilly’s childish acts and cannot take any more of his behaviour. Whilst reading through the play everyone laughed at the scene when I say my line “Well Brian … I’m here” and “I’m all yours … Handsome” to Louis’ character Reilly, who is a cheeky kid and thinks he is the most good-looking boy in the class. His reaction to those lines is scared and confused, this is because he was messing around and did not...

Week Beginning the 20th April

Mnday 20th April research into radio play  Task 1 – Radio play is presented through sound alone, it needs a script, music and sound effects to keep the audience engaged. These will help the listeners imagine where the story is set, what the play is about and what the characters look like by the actor’s voices. Task 2 – “I am Kanye West” is my first radio play podcast. It was written by Darragh Mortell. The genre is comedy with a twist. The podcast is about a man called Toby Daniels who thinks he is Kanye West. He has been taken to a psychiatric hospital by police after a 999 call was made by his wife. After being released from the hospital he is in a taxi listening to the radio, it mentions Kanye West has been missing. The driver comments that Toby looks like Kanye, the drama finishes with the line “wait, what did you just say?”. The story starts with beeping sounds, nurses talking over each other to a patient who is giving birth. The sounds change to a new scene, ...

Week Beginning the 31st March

On Tuesday 31st March, t his is the Costume I will be wearing when performing my monologue as India. India's costume  I chose this costume because my character India loves fashion, so she would wear clothes that are trendy and seen on today’s high street.  Idea for India's costume  from mood board This image was featured on my mood board when I was creating my characters look. It is a style that is worn by young people who are confident and love fashion. India is someone who enjoys being looked at, she loves getting attention from anyone that will make her feel wanted and loved. How she looks is important to her because she feels her life is a movie so she must look perfect everyday and ready for the camera to start filming.

Week Beginning the 27th March

On Thursday 27th March, after videoing myself rehearsing my monologue, I am not sure if I am going to use a glass to drink from as I thought it did not fit the scene. I think I will make my mind up in a couple of days. At the moment I am really pleased with how rehearsals are going. I have learnt my lines and I am taking my time.

Week Beginning the 16th March

On Monday 16 th  March,  we got into pairs and read our monologues to each other. I partnered with Louis. His monologue is about a group of teenagers who bully someone to their death, but later find out he is still alive . I thought Louis should say his monologue in a slower and clearer voice because I felt he had rushed his speech. This also showed that he was not in character. We were then given these four emotions: Happy Sad Confused Joyous We took turns to perform, the class choose the emotion for each of us to do. With my monologue, I was told to perform in a confused way. After performing Rob believed that I should talk from my stomach as I was talking from my throat. Talking from your stomach helps your voice become clearer and louder, the audience will be able to hear and see a better performance from you. I will learn from that when rehearsing at home. On Tuesday 17 th March, we made a profile for our monologues character. We wrote about who are ...

Week Beginning the 9th March

On Monday 9th March, we were put into groups of three. We had to choose from the options below and do a performance:    Receiving bad news  In court  I worked with Henok and Kenroy. We chose the option “receiving bad news”.   Our performance was discovering who my dad is. Henok played my dad and Kenroy was the investigator. We worked as a team, we listened to each other’s ideas and that made the story grow. Our performance was based on me hiring an investigator to find out where my dad was. Kenroy told me my dad was dying from cancer. When I go to the hospital to meet him for the first time, I read a letter that he wrote for me. It was about how sorry he was for leaving me when I was little and he only did it to protect me. After reading the letter my dad dies.  Shenagh wanted us to do our performance again because she wanted me to focus on my character. After performing for the second time, she said I used my facial expressions very w...

Week Beginning the 2nd March

On Monday 2nd March, we studied mime . We were given scenes to perform. The options for us where: Making your favourite food Babysitting and giving them food Making food for your boyfriend but putting poison in it as he cheated on you Being a chef and acting like Gordon Ramsey I chose to mime a scene where I poison my boyfriend. After performing Shenagh told me I had good facial expressions but I should be clear about what I am making in the kitchen. So I need to make my movements more clear and exaggerated so the audience know what I am doing.   We then got into our Silent Movie groups and rehearsed our performance. We then went over it in front of the class. Shenagh gave us feedback.  Our feedback:  Make our  facial expressions more over the top to show our emotions. Take our time .  Shenagh then gave us all a word, we had to use facial expressions to show what that word meant.  E.g:  "confused" we frowned. ...

Week Beginning the 24th February

On Monday 24th February,  we got into our Silent Movie groups and showed Shenagh our performances. Only myself, Hanna and Louis were in lesson so it was very challenging to do the scenes without Ashleigh as she is one of the main characters. We decided it would be good for Louis to play Ashleighs role. Shenagh told us whilst performing our scene to say one word that describes how we were feeling. We will not say them on the final performance but saying these words will help us express our facial expressions and body language. For example:  In Scene 1 when playing the Ouija board, I said the word “scared”, I will move my hand quickly off the board to my chest to show the audience I do not want to play the game anymore. I will frown to show fear as I have not been in this situation before. After using the words, we did the performance without the words and showed them in our facial expressions.  In Rob’s lesson we discussed what we had learnt with Shenagh in o...
